In Time Review

Hey! It’s Meagan and today I’m reviewing a fairly new novella in Alexandra Bracken’s Darkest Minds series… In Time!

In Time (The Darkest Minds, #1.5)
In Time
by Alexandra Bracken
pages: 89
I don’t recommend reading further if you have not read The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken…

Gabe’s life has been devastated in the wake of the economic crash. The only option left for someone like him to escape his tragic past is to leave his small town behind and to attempt to become a skip tracer. This already almost impossible task is made all the more difficult by his first score, a young girl who won’t speak, but who changes his life in ways he could never imagine. –goodreads.com summery

This is a hard book to give a rating to; considering it was only 89 pages, but those were some great 89 pages! It had great characters, a great plot, and my favorite part; it explained what happened to Zu after The Darkest Minds.

Now first… the characters… Zu was just as amazing and just as likable as she was in The Darkest Minds. She was just as smart, helpful, and the little mentions of Liam, Chubs, and Ruby made me want to cry (but in a good way)… then there was Gabe. Gabe was the kinda guy that did whatever it took to get by, and you saw that… but then Zu came along. I loved seeing him slowly realize that he actually cared about Zu and that she wasn’t a monster.

Second, I loved the plot! The plot was simple, and interesting. What keeps you reading is that you already care about Zu and she’s still the Zu you love from The Darkest Minds; so you want to know what is going to happen to her. The book is fast paced because you don’t need to fall in love with Zu… you already love her, so the book can jump into the action. Now a great part of this book, that I feel more dystopian books should do, is give the reader an adult POV. Most books only show you what the kids think/ how they feel about the situation, but In Time is (almost) only from an adult POV. You get to see how much the adults actually know about the children’s situation… this book shows how blind everyone else in the world really is.

Last I love finding out what happened to Zu. After The Darkest Minds I always assumed everything went smooth with Zu, but this book tells the full story of what actually happened… no more assuming… just the brutal, honest truth…

Overall I loved this book! It had lots of great elements that came together to make an amazing, interesting, and suspenseful book! It kept me reading and I loved the throwbacks to The Darkest Minds characters and showing the emotional connection they really had with Zu, and what they taught her. I feel like this book’s job was to get people excited for Never Fade (and to continue Zu’s story) and I think In Time did its job… and more… :)

That’s all from me…
